The Marion Council on Aging has the following events in January.
The Learning and Leisure Lectures take place on Mondays in January. All lectures are held at the Marion Music Hall, 164 Front St., free and open to the community.
Jan. 9, 12:45 p.m.
“Movement is Medicine” – Pain is a public health issue that affects more Americans than cancer, diabetes and heart disease combined. While pain often leads to decreased movement and activity, research has shown that exercise is imperative to maintaining health and reducing pain. Physical therapists can help to evaluate musculoskeletal dysfunction and advise with an appropriate exercise program to reduce painful symptoms and maintain mobility in order to participate in family and community activities. Chiron Physical Therapy, based in Marion, will lead a discussion on how physical therapy can help reduce pain.
Jan. 23, 12:45 p.m.
“The Art of Ancient Greece” – Jill Sanford will give a brief, yet thorough overview of the innovations in ancient Greece’s pottery, sculpture and architecture. With an emphasis on Greece’s famous Classical time period, Sanford will make connections with ancient Rome as well as current culture.
Jan. 30, 12:45 p.m.
“Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute” – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean research, exploration and education. Its scientists and engineers push the boundaries of knowledge about the ocean to reveal its impacts on the planet and our lives. Join Kathy Patterson as she gives an overview of the work that is done there.
Mondays, 10-11 a.m.
Chair yoga – Pamela Smith Paquette will lead free chair yoga classes on Mondays in January at Music Hall for free. This class is sponsored, in part, by a grant from the Executive Office of Elder Affairs.
Wednesdays, 11:45-2 p.m.
Waterfront Memory Café – Meeting at the Music Hall, the cafe welcomes anyone with early to moderate Alzheimer’s disease or dementia with their care provider, friend or family for lunch and an afternoon of activities. You do not have to be a Marion resident to participate. Call 508-748-3570 for more information.
