A car at the Mattapoisett Tedeschi Food Shop burst into flames on Friday afternoon.

Fire Chief Andy Murray said two-foot flames were coming out of the engine before firefighters extinguished it.

According to the owner, she bumped the metal parking post in the parking lot and the engine began to smoke. She had not experienced any engine trouble before the incident.

Murray said the problem was some sort of mechanical failure.
