Resident connected to Tiverton house break in arrested in Dartmouth
A Mattapoisett man was arrested after Dartmouth Police spotted him in the vehicle connected to a house break in in Tiverton, Rhode Island.
Sergeant Peter Canuel spotted the 2005 Mercedes traveling on Hixville Road around 12:45 p.m. on August 11, which eventually led to the arrest of Michael Joseph Couto, 49.
Canuel, recognizing the car and driver as matching the description of the Tiverton suspect, called the police and followed Couto in his person vehicle until units arrived, police said.
As the police units arrived, Couto tried to strike a Dartmouth cruiser and fled, police said. Shortly later, Sergeant Joseph Rapoza located the Mercedes abandoned on the railroad tracks on Highland Avenue.
Rapoza and Officer Keith DeCosta located Couto by the Massachusetts State Police air wing, and took him into custody without incident, police said.
Couto was charged with one warrant for breaking and entering for a felony and larceny. He was also charged with assault with a dangerous weapon to hit a motor vehicle, fail to stop, speeding, negligent operation, and marked lanes violation.
During the house break, Couto allegedly attempted to run over a Tiverton officer while fleeing the scene.
