Jillian Zucco took home her first award during Miss America on the night of September 7, when she walked away with a $5,000 science scholarship.

Zucco, from Mattapoisett and this year's Miss Massachusetts, was one of five competitors shortlisted to receive a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Scholarship from the Miss America program. The scholarship is meant for contestant who are studying a STEM-based educational field.

Zucco graduated with honors from UMass Dartmouth's nursing program. She is currently a certified telemetry nurse, who works per-diem to fit around her pageant schedule. She plans to pursue graduate studies in nursing and earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice in the future.

Miss Massachusetts interviewed for the scholarship on Thursday afternoon, and was awarded the scholarship the same night. The other winners were Miss Kentucky (agricultural science) and Miss District of Columbia (pediatric medicine).

Zucco was also the second runner-up in the Children's Miracle Network's "Miracle Maker Award." The award is intended to honor the Miss America contestants who have raised the most money for the Children's Miracle Network. Zucco has raised over $25,000 for the program.

The second-runner up award netted Zucco an additional $2,000 scholarship.

Miss America isn't Zucco's first brush with the Miracle Maker Award. She won Miss Massachusetts' Miracle Maker Award in both 2016 and 2017.
