Sippican Tennis Club junior team to compete in national championships

The Sippican Tennis Club's junior team is striking off for finals, and players hope to return to Marion next week with something heavier and shinier than just rackets in hand.

The team's players have their eye on a top prize—a national championship trophy.

The team, comprised of young tennis players from Marion in Mattapoisett, will compete in the 2017 United States Tennis Association Junior Teams Tennis National Championships, in the 14 and under division. This year, the competition is in Orlando, Florida, from September 22-24.

The Sippican Tennis Club team is one of the top 32 under-14 teams in the country, and as such it has been invited to the championships. In July, the players defeated 16 other teams to become the United States Tennis Association Junior Teams Tennis New England Champions.

The team is coached by Jesse Gotlib and features team members Athena Kettner, Katie Holmes, Will Vrattos, Gracie McCarthy, Caroline Owens, William Hurlbutt, and Grace Russell, all of Marion, and Taylor Thomas of Mattapoisett.

The National Championships is the "crown jewel" of the United States Tennis Association's junior tennis divison, according to the association's website.

“The National Championships provide an opportunity to celebrate each of these teams who had a similar yet different path to qualify for the event through their respective sections,” said Matt Barnhart, National Manager for United States Tennis Association Junior Team Tennis. “The players really enjoy the competition aspect as well as getting the chance to bond with other players from all over the country on and off the court."
