Experience is top dog in alumni vs. student soccer game

Nov 24, 2017

Old Rochester's soccer team alumni proved they were still leading the pack when they defeated a team of current players 3-1 at Old Rochester on November 24.

Friday marked the fourth alumni showdown. It was also the fourth year that the alumni defeated the current players, keeping an undefeated record intact. There was a moment of worry, though—at half-time, the score was 0-1, in favor of the current players.

It was only in the second half of the game that the alumni players managed to score three goals.

The older team was composed of mostly recent graduates; the oldest was a group from the class of 2009 (putting them around age 26), including former varsity soccer players Alex Cordeiro, John Santos and Tom Morss.

The "current" team consisted of mostly current high school players, with a few younger players mixed in. The youngest player in the game was James Devoll, still in elementary school. Nevertheless, he had little trouble staying in the thick of things.

Devoll is the son of Mike Devoll, Principal of Old Rochester Regional High School, and also the head coach of the boys' varsity soccer team.

When Principall Devoll blew the final whistle, James came sprinting for the turkey-shaped trophy, which will remain in the possession of the alumni team. "I want to carry it!" he said, and proudly handed the trophy over to the alumni team himself.
