Lady Bulldogs shut out by Wareham 0-26 in powderpuff game

Nov 30, 2017

Old Rochester lost its bid to win a second annual powderpuff victory on November 29.

The Lady Vikings completely shut out the ORR Lady Bulldogs, nearly leaping to victory with an overall score of 26-0.

Wareham players Gabby Lefrancois and Shayla Foote often worked as a tandem team, with Foote catching a majority of Lefrancois' passes.

Senior Haley DeMello also caught several of Lefrancois' passes, eventually scoring a touchdown late in the second quarter.

By the start of half-time, the score was already 14-0 in favor of Wareham.

In the second half, the Vikings only widened their leading margin. The Vikings scored another touchdown in the third quarter to bring the score to 20-0, although an attempted two-point conversion was thwarted by the Bulldogs.

In the fourth quarter, several interceptions kept offense and defense lineups moving. Old Rochester players intercepted the ball, only to face further interceptions from the Lady Vikings. In the end, the Lady Bulldogs wrapped the game up with final score of 26-0.

The annual powderpuff game is a fundraiser for both schools; it began three years ago. Prior to 2015, Old Rochester's junior and senior girls faced off in the annual powderpuff match, but Old Rochester Principal Mike Devoll said he found the match to be divisive than unifying.

Old Rochester defeated Wareham in 2016, but they lost the inaugural game in 2015, as well as this year's edition.

South Coast Sports and Consignment, of East Wareham, is sponsoring a scholarship for one student from each powderpuff team. The scholarship winners will be announced later in the week.
