Old Colony student finds a path to big-time graphic design

Dec 3, 2017

A Rochester resident, and Old Colony graphic arts student, has signed on to design for a nationally-touring Christian band.

Senior Erin Taylor, from Old Colony's Graphics Design & Communication department, was recently hired by Christian band Tenth Avenue North.

Working as one of the band's main graphic designers, Taylor has created and designed logos for the band, as well as their promotional material.

Taylor's collaboration with Tenth Avenue North began when she was a junior at Old Colony. One of her class assignments was a hypothetical t-shirt design for an apparel company. She chose to do a faith-based design, inspired by Tenth Avenue North’s song “All the Earth is Holy Ground."

Upon completing the assignment, "I put the design on Instagram and tagged the band," Taylor said. Tenth Avenue North responded by requesting to use her design, which she agreed to.

Soon, other graphic design requests followed from the band. By the time Erin arrived at Soulfest, a Christian music festival in New Hampshire, no introductions were needed. The band knew exactly who she was, and didn’t hesitate to offer her more work.

Soon after, other freelance design requests followed. One was an album cover for Zach Loomis, another Christian music artist.

Then, Taylor said she was asked to create a logo for Remade Records, a music company based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Taylor also designed the graphics for two t-shirts intended for Tenth Avenue North's fall tour—one for the tour, and one a t-shirt with the band's name.

Alongside graphic design, Taylor also designed an ugly sweater for Tenth Avenue North's new song "Mistletoe (The Christmas Sweater Song)."

Taylor has future work with the band lined up as well. She will be redoing the graphic logo for the "Tenth Avenue North Golf Classic." The Classic is a fundraiser which supports Christ Centered Ministries, an organization seeking to connect more people with the Christian church.

Taylor said she expects the The Golf Classic logo to be redone by the time the golf tournament rolls out in August 2018 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
