Mattapoisett dancer takes on lead role in 'The Nutcracker'

Cami Parker wants to be a dancer forever. But before she can worry about the rest of her life, she has “The Nutcracker” to prepare for.

Parker was cast as Clara, the leading role, in Spindle City Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker.” In the story, Clara receives a wooden nutcracker doll from her godfather. A night of magic ensues as Clara embarks on an adventure with her nutcracker, who transforms into a prince and takes her to his kingdom.

“I didn’t really believe it,” Parker said of the casting. “It took me a few days before it sunk in.”

Spindle City Ballet is based in Fall River, and Parker has been a student there for two years. The studio’s production of “The Nutcracker” features both students and professional dancers.

“I love getting to work with everyone,” Parker said. “It’s amazing getting to work with professionals and getting to talk to people who are so advanced.”

Before starting at Spindle City, Parker, a freshman at Old Rochester Regional High School, danced for a few years at another studio, but decided she wanted to focus more intently on ballet.

“I like how hard it is, and that it’s a challenge,” she said. “You get to express yourself in a way that’s precise but still unique.”

Dancing doesn’t run in Parker’s family, but it’s something that has always been part of her.

“I did an after school program when I was 3 or 4,” she said. “I can remember that I loved it.”

Parker’s mother Christine agreed, and said that dancing is in Parker’s blood.

“[Parker] is definitely passionate about it,” Christine said. “She has a ballet barre in her bedroom. Even when she’s not dancing, she’s dancing.”

The performances begin Dec. 16, and Parker said she’s feeling ready.

“It was overwhelming at first, but I got used to it and I’m excited to perform it,” she said.

Eighth grader Klara Whalley from Mattapoisett and sixth grader Allison Root from Rochester are also in the show.

Performances are Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. For more information, visit spindlecityballet.org.
