Tabor Academy to host Greg Abate Quartet Jan. 19

Tabor Academy is hosting the Greg Abate Quartet on January 19 at 7 p.m. in the Lyndon South Auditorium, 85 Spring St. The concert is open to the public and admission is free.

Greg Abate is a jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer and an international jazz recording artist. He will be joined by Matt Richard on the piano, Todd Baker on the bass and Gary Johnson on the drums.

After finishing a four-year program at Berklee College of Music, Abate played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for two years, before starting his own group. He has played through the U.S., Canada and abroad. Currently, Abate is an adjunct professor of jazz studies at Rhode Island College and conducts master classes across the globe. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Richard is a Fairhaven native and a graduate of Westfield State College. As a composer and arranger, he has contributed to numerous recordings, including his own albums.

Baker played for two years with the Artie Shaw Orchestra and led bands on the Carnival Cruise lines. He has also played with Rosemary Clooney, Cab Calloway, The Four Freshman and The Woody Herman Band.

Johnson has been working professionally for more than 30 years, and has accompanied top jazz instrumentalists and vocalists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Wilson, Rosemary Clooney, the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Buddy De Franco, Connie Hanes, Scott Hamilton, Dave McKenna and Ruby Braff.
