Sippican School receives $30,000 donation

Sippican School received an anonymous $30,000 donation, which the Marion School Committee accepted at Wednesday night’s meeting.

“I know what we’ve done in years past when we’ve gotten donations like this, and on behalf of the children of Sippican we say ‘thank you,’” Chair Christine Marcolini said.

The school has received anonymous donations of $25,000 for the past handful of years with the stipulation that it be used to benefit students instead of for budgetary shortfalls.

In previous years, the money was used to purchase 200 new Chromebook laptops, iPads, field trips and equipment for the nurse’s office.

Former committee member Christine Winters had previously opposed the acceptance of the donation, specifically with the anonymous nature of the gift. In November 2016, Winters’ husband Peter requested that the name of the donor be released, but the Board of Selectmen voted to take legal action to protect the donor.

It is unknown at this time if the donors are the same.
