ORR girls basketball takes conference championship

The Old Rochester Regional High School girls basketball team won the South Coast Conference championship on Friday night.

“It’s just another one,” Head Coach Bob Hohne joked.

The Bulldogs beat Bourne 49-44 to take the title in a physical matchup.

“I think we battled on the boards as well as we could,” Hohne said. “Their size and physicality disrupted our offense.”

Sophomore player Mary Butler agreed, adding that the team wasn’t used to such a physical style of play.

“We can’t always rely on what we have, sometimes we have to dig deeper and improvise,” she said. “We have to adjust to their style of game.”

The Bulldogs took the lead from the start and never relinquished it, ending the first half up 20-16, and maintaining it through a close stretch at the end.

The win gives ORR an overall record of 18-1 on the season thus far, and an automatic spot in the state tournament.

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years and I look at the state tournament as a reward for a good season,” Hohne said.

The Bulldogs will close out their regular season Monday when they host New Bedford.
