ORR boys' basketball wins buzzer-beater victory, 60-59, over Case

Feb 17, 2018

Supporters of Case High School's varsity boys' basketball team could be forgiven for thinking they'd won the game on Feb. 16. Facing off against a tiring group from Old Rochester Regional High School, there were eight seconds left on the clock and Case was up two points, 59-57.

Then Old Rochester varsity captain Bennett Fox came down the court with a vengeance, sinking a basket from beyond the three-point line as the buzzer rang out.

For a brief moment, confusion. Then—cheering from Old Rochester supporters. The game was theirs, 60-59, at the moment the team seemed resigned to defeat.

"I was milking the clock a bit," said the varsity head coach, Steve Carvalho. "Then I saw [Fox] come down the court, and he got it done."

Old Rochester led most of the first half. Team members watched their lead diminish in the third quarter though, despite two baskets from senior Jason Gamache.

"We didn't shoot well in the second half," Carvalho acknowledged. "They have one of the strongest players in the league, Drew Plante, and I had my work cut out for me figuring out how to deal with him."

Despite Plante's prowess on the court, Old Rochester triumphed. The win brings the team's overall record to 13-4.
