In the first Mattapoisett School Committee meeting since a school shooting in Parkland, Florida claimed the lives of 17 high schoolers, safety was a top point of discussion.

“In light of the tragedy that happened in Florida, we’ve talked about some of the things happening in our buildings,” Superintendent Doug White said.

White said that the Mattapoisett schools shared a resource officer for safety, and that the town had approved funding to put new vestibules in the schools to streamline visitors through the front office.

“We have also improved the camera so the person at the desk can see the person buzzing in,” White said. “We’ve also updated cameras in all of our buildings.”

Additionally, students and teachers have received ALICE (alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate) training so that they can be prepared in the case of an emergency.

“We have training so that people know their roles and responsibilities for an intruder situation,” White said.

Principal Rose Bowen added that Center School and Old Hammondtown School will both add one more day of ALICE training.

“We used to do it in the fall and spring, but we will increase it,” she said.
