Members of the Rochester School Committee on May 9 thanked administrators of the Old Rochester School District and Rochester Memorial School for their quick actions and continuing support during a "difficult week" for the school.

Sixth-grade teacher James Sullivan was placed on indefinite administrative leave on May 4, after several students accused him of "inappropriate behavior." Sullivan turned himself in to police on May 5, and was charged with assault and battery, as well as assault and battery of a child under the age of 14. He was released on May 7 after posting a $10,040 bail. His pre-trial date is set for May 31.

"I want to thank school officials for open communication during this difficult week," said School Committee Chair Tina Rood. She noted that officials quickly brought in a specialist who helped both staff and parents explain what happened to the students, as well as how to support the students.

Old Rochester School District Superintendent Doug White also thanked administrators for their support in a "difficult situation." He also thanked Rochester Memorial School parents, whom he said have been very helpful and supportive. "We remain committed to learning, but in a safe environment," he added.
