'Our fire department came to the rescue'
Dear Editor,
After Hurricane Irene pummeled Mattapoisett, the Mattapoisett Housing Authority's Village Court sustained a major power outage. Since emergency lights were on during daylight hours, battery power was drained leaving the entire senior housing complex in pitch darkness for those critical overnight hours—no emergency lights or exit lights illuminated the way to safety.
Fire Chief Andrew Murray showed common sense, concern for residents and displayed strong leadership skills, and for that, we are grateful. He assessed the situation determining that intervention was necessary if tenants were to remain safe. Chief Murray installed a generator and spotlight at the front entrance. And, more importantly, he put a fire watch in place for the entire night. Two courageous Mattapoisett firefighters, Keenan Martin and Cory Silva, did perimeter and interior checks patrolling the building every fifteen minutes.
We are appreciative and grateful for the kindness and compassion shown by the entire Mattapoisett Fire Departments especially Chief Murray, Lt. Saltmarsh and firefighters Keenan Martin and Cory Silva. when Hurricane Irene roared into town, our well-disciplined fire department came to the rescue and stayed with us every step of the way.
With our deep gratitude for your service,
Roberta Tripp, Sharon Duggan, Ann Wallace and Joyce Gagne
