The Mattapoisett Board of Selectmen, and Marion Town Administrator James McGrail have issued updates on June 14 swimming and shellfishing closures after a sewage release from the Marion Wastewater Plant.

As of Thursday, June 20, Aucoot Cove remains closed to shellfishing, but open to swimming. All other closures have been lifted.

The Division of Marine Fisheries initially closed the waters, flats, and tributaries of Aucoot Cove, Hiller’s Cove, and the portion of the bay north of a line between Peases Point in Mattapoisett and Centerboard Shoals/the southern end of Converse Point.

According to a press release from the town of Marion, a water quality test at the plant indicated bacteria levels that temporarily exceeded standards based on an isolated water sample. An investigation revealed that a clogged filter at the plant caused the issue. The filter has been replaced, and the issue is not likely to recur.

To be safe, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has ordered shellfishing to remain closed at Aucoot Cove for two weeks. At that time state officials will conduct another test. The town will notify residents that shellfishing can resume if no contaminants are found.
