The Mom's Choice Awards has named "Step Ahead of Autism: What You Can Do to Ensure the Best Possible Outcome for Your Child" by Anne Moore Burnett, among the best in family-friendly media, products, and services.

"Step Ahead of Autism" chronicles the journey Burnett and her son Joey went through when he was diagnosed with autism at two-and-a-half years old and gives parents of autistic children advice on how to handle the disorder. Joey is highly functioning with his disorder; he graduated valedictorian from Bishop Stang High School in 2008 and is currently a senior at Brown University. Burnett resides in Marion.

The Mom’s Choice Awards is an awards program that recognizes authors, inventors, companies, parents, and others for their efforts in creating quality family-friendly media, products, and services. Parents, educators, librarians, and retailers can rely on the group's evaluations to help them make informed decisions when selecting quality materials for children and families.

To be considered for an award, each entrant submits five identical samples of a product, which are matched to judges. Judges then perform a thorough analysis and submit a detailed assessment. Results are compiled and submitted to the Mom's Choice Awards Executive Committee for final approval. The end result is a list of family-friendly media, products and services that parents and educators can feel confident in using.

The panel of judges includes education, media and other experts as well as parents, children, librarians, performing artists, producers, medical and business professionals, authors, scientists and others. The judges are bound by a strict code of ethics, which ensures expert and objective analysis free from any manufacturer association. The evaluation process uses a propriety methodology in which entries are scored on a number of elements including production quality, design, educational value, entertainment value, originality, appeal, and cost.
