ROCHESTER — Despite an unexpected day off brought by the remnants of Hurricane Ida two days after school opened, Rochester Memorial School officials said the year has been off to a great start.

At a Sept. 2 Rochester School Committee meeting, Superintendent Micheal Nelson and Principal Derek Medeiros gave updates following the first days of school.

“We couldn’t ask for a smoother first two days of school,” Medeiros said. “What an outstanding opening.”

He commended teachers for their preparedness to start the year, and families for their cooperation with covid safety guidelines during an open house on Aug. 31.

Medeiros said the school “started getting those emails around August 3,” from teachers, asking “is the building open yet?”

Nelson said that “like last year it’s been an interesting first week again.” But this year, the superintendent noted, the schools will put a more direct focus on teaching and learning issues, while still working on covid safety.

“There are just so many incredible things happening her at Rochester Memorial and in our school district,” he said.
