Mattapoisett resident takes social media to WSAR 1480 AM

Jan 30, 2012

“Turned on and tuned in.”

That’s how Mattapoisett resident and digital strategist John Theriault, describes residents of Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester. Theriault owns Truventis, a New Bedford-based digital consulting firm focused on social media—things like Facebook, Twitter, Meetup and Foursquare.

With the help of Truventis, First Citizens Federal Credit Union has more than 1,300 “likes” on Facebook.

“It’s perfect for this area, because this area is a hot spot for learning new technologies,” he says. “Just look at the teaching programs available at ORCTV and the work being done at Old Rochester Regional. It’s fantastic.”

“The environment has changed drastically since I was at UMass Dartmouth, when cable was coming into the scene. We didn’t have the explosion of media that we have now, and with it comes all kinds of opportunities.”

Theriault says there is a huge market for businesses and residents to get online. Facebook, for instance, is huge with the 30 to 50-year-old crowd. People are creating conversations, he says, especially with companies.

Not to mention some people are even making Facebook accounts for their pets and “friending” other area pets.

Now Theriault, an avid sailor and proud owner of Ike, a Portuguese Water Dog, has taken his talents to the airwaves.

With the help of WSAR 1480 AM Theriault hosts “Digital Insider,” a weekly segment covering social media and its impact along the South Coast.

The show is a natural for Theriault, who grew up wanting to be a TV anchor. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in business, he wound up at Harvard Business School and loved every minute of it.

“I realized I needed a new piece in my life,” he says. “I was surrounded by these bright kids coming from top consulting firms, and through them I learned about this field.”

Within a few years he was at the helm of such non-profits as the Lexington and Plymouth Chambers of Commerce.

But the road to success has never been easy.

Truventis, which has been around for three years, started in his home in Mattapoisett four years after his last venture—a business consulting firm—was bought out in 2005.

“I love trying new things, but after working in the various Chambers, I was sort of own my own,” he says. “I was working out of my bedroom! It was tough. There were times when I was skeptical, and something like this requires an inordinate amount of self-discipline. It’s easier to just going sailing instead of working for yourself.”

Theriault says “Digital Insider” looks at interesting ways of doing digital business and teaching tech along the way.

He gets a little help from his family as well. One of his nephews, who is attending Emerson, does video work for the show. Theriault says he’d like to utilize the high schools too to teach students some of the ropes.

“We now have a two-way connection with corporations,” he says. “And for some, they’re hesitant to listen to the consumer, for fear that it’s something bad. But we can take that as an opportunity to work together. Having that ability to speak is powerful.”

Future guests on the show include the Boston Globe’s New Media Lab director, as well as experts in “Search Engine Optimization” and mobile marketing.

“I simply find it fascinating, the way we handle business online,” Theriault says. “The show is a perfect for the audience in the area.”

Of course, on a warm, sunny day, he still gets that urge to close shop and go sailing.

"Digital Insider" can be heard at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays via WSAR 1480 AM.
