New seafood market fills fresh fish gap in Marion

MARION — When Josh Naughton prepares a swordfish steak or an “old reliable” codfish filet, he doesn’t want to mask the natural flavor of fresh fish — and as owner of newly-opened J. Naughton Seafood in Marion, he hopes to bring fresh fish to the people.

“I just want to give [people] the freshest fish available every day and treat people right,” said Naughton. “People ask, ‘what is good customer service?’ Just being a good human being.”

J. Naughton Seafood opened on Friday, Aug. 4 at 173 Wareham Rd. in the building that was formerly Seahorse Seafood. Since opening, business has been “great,” he said.

“People seem very happy that we opened,” said Naughton. “They’re really happy that this location remained a seafood market.”

Jennifer Webb, who bought “beautiful looking cod loins” at the market, is “really, really pleased” that there is a seafood market in town.

Inside J. Naughton Seafood are cases full of salmon filets, tuna steaks and shellfish as well as tanks holding live lobsters.

Naughton, who ran the seafood, deli, bakery and specialty cheese departments at Roche Bros. Supermarkets, sources his fish from Boston’s Fish Pier, New Bedford, Gloucester, and Portland Maine.

“I have select distributors too that I trust and they're going to sell me the best stuff available every day,” he said. “And if I'm not at the auctions myself in the morning I'll utilize them.”

In addition to fresh seafood, the market sells other grocery and specialty items from Massachusetts-based companies including Marion’s own Great Hill Blue Cheese.

Looking forward, Naughton hopes to open a wholesale arm of the business beginning in January.

“There’s a ton of space in the back,” he said. “I know that years ago [there was] a robust wholesale operation out of this building.”

No matter how he expands, Naughton wants customers “to be comfortable,” he said. “They're going to come into my shop and they know they're going to get the freshest fish available that day.”
