Mattapoisett Quakers raise funds, awareness at annual yard sale
MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Quakers’ annual yard sale has been going on for “a long time,” said Johanna Duponte-Williams, a Mattapoisett resident and Quaker.
In fact, the sale has been going on for so long that even “very beloved elder,” Quaker Brad Hathaway, can only guess how long it has been happening.
“It’s been years,” he said, noting that the yard sale is one of the Mattapoisett Quakers’ “prime sources of income.”
This year’s sale was held on Saturday, Oct. 7 and Monday, Oct. 9 with the goal of fundraising for the organization.
Recently, the Mattapoisett Quakers’ replaced the entrance to their community hall at a cost of $8,000, said Duponte-Williams, who added that the yard sale’s goal was to help recoup that cost.
Everything from home goods to clothing to sports equipment was for sale at the yard sale.
Hathaway, an avid stamp collector and longtime Standard-Times features editor who wrote a recurring column about stamps, had a table selling stamps and letters he had collected over the years.
“He’s sold quite a bit of stuff,” said Dennis Bollea, a friend of Hathaway’s who manned the stamp table. “It just takes a couple of people who are interested and [who] spend 45 minutes going through everything.”
Set aside at the stamp table were kid-friendly and beginner-friendly materials to encourage young people to try their hand at stamp collecting, said Bollea.
Aside from raising money, Duponte-Williams hopes that the yard sale raises awareness for the Quakers in Mattapoisett.
“We’re opening our doors to encourage people to come in and meet us,” she said.
