Rochester resident takes 2nd place win at Best Buddies Challenge

Rochester resident Ed Buckley scored a second place finish for Team Tom Brady in the 13th annual Best Buddies Challenge on Saturday, June 2, despite a last-minute bicycle malfunction.

While approaching the finish line, Buckley’s rear tire slid out of place with only 50 feet left to go.

“I managed to hold on and not crash,” he said.

Despite the heavy rain and wind, Buckley finished the close race with a time of 2 hours and 46 minutes.

Established in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, the race includes a 100, 50 or 20-mile bike ride from Boston to Hyannis Port, and a 5K run or walk with Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis.

Buckley’s win marks the second time he has participated in the event.

Last year he finished third with a time of 2 hours and 43 minutes.

Every year the event’s organizers, including event Chair Tom Brady, donate nearly all of the proceeds to charities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

It was a family affair for Buckley on Saturday. His wife Shelly and his 11-year-old daughter Elsie participated in the 5K walk.

“I received an enormous amount of support out there,” Buckley said.

The Buckleys raised $3,500 to donate to the cause adding to the day’s total of over $4.5 million.

The cause, he said, is what inspired him to spend months fundraising.

“Experiencing it last year is what brought me back again,” he said. “Seeing the people you are doing it for at the finish line almost brings tears to your eyes.”

An avid bicyclist since childhood, Buckley said he began road riding in the late ‘90s as a way to get in shape. Since then, he has joined a local group of fellow enthusiasts that regularly go for rides on the weekends.

Before Saturday, he said he had roughly 500 miles under his belt to prepare for the race.

“I just enjoy it,” he said. “I enjoy the speed and the scenery.”

As for next year, Buckley said he plans on doing even better.

“We will be doing it again next year with my eyes on first place,” he said.
