‘The Poop Museum’ drops by in Marion
MARION — Tri-Town children and their curious parents huddled into a room inside of the Elizabeth Taber Library on Monday, July 15 to learn all about one of Mother Nature’s most fascinating creations — poop.
Susie Maguire has spent her career traveling and working with children.
Both of these paths have led her to create The Poop Museum, a program she gives to children in person and virtually to teach them all about the world of poop.
Attendees learned all about different animals and their droppings across the world.
One takeaway from the show might have been that panda bears poop about 40 times a day.
Kids laughed and parents turned their heads as a projector screen showed videos of numerous animals defecating.
“I just hope they had a ton of fun learning a bunch of science,” said Maguire. “This program covers anatomy, physiology and biology, but in a hilariously fun way.”
Over the course of the program, some kids shared some fun facts they had already known about poop in the animal kingdom.
“I love how kids know random stuff, and often it's a surprise to their parents that they know that stuff,” said Maguire.
Maguire said her original inspiration for the museum idea came when she was writing a children’s book for her nephew, with whom she shares a “lavatorial sense of humor.”.
She wrote about a monkey who liked to throw poop. In the book, the monkey’s source of finding more poop to throw was a poop museum.
Four years later, Maguire estimates that 15,000 kids from 80 countries have watched one of her programs. She credits the Poop Museum for “two-thirds” of that.
Maguire, decked out in her poop hat, and poop shoes, said that her favorite part about her program is that kids usually tend to remember what they learned.
