Summer athletics club for kids stays on track
MATTAPOISETT — The 2024 Summer Olympics begin in just a few days, and the world’s greatest in track and field will soon flock to Paris’s Stade de France to compete. Those Olympic events begin in August.
In Mattapoisett, track and field greatness has already been underway for weeks. Every Monday and Wednesday throughout the summer, children from the area come to Old Rochester Regional High School for the Mattapoisett Track Club.
After a few evenings of practice, the club held its first meet of the season Monday, July 22.
“This is for real,” said Mary Ann Amoruso, who runs the Mattapoisett Track Club with a team of helpers.
Kids as young as 3 and 4 years old up to seventh grade and older participated in the games at the Old Rochester track. They rotated through different track and field events, like shot put, javelin, discus and hurdles.
Because it was a meet rather than a practice, results for each participant were measured. But that didn’t mean the athletes there weren’t still on the same team.
“When our teammates are doing something, we encourage them,” Amoruso said to the group before the games began.
Ribbons were handed out after each round of competitions.
“We’re all part of the Mattapoisett Track Club,” Amoruso said.
