MARION — Hundreds of dollars will soon benefit an animal hospital in Boston after a Sippican Elementary School student spent a weekend afternoon selling snacks to raise money for the medical center that treated her dog’s broken jaw.

Hailey Costa, 8, operated a snack stand Saturday, Oct. 5 in order to collect money to donate to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which repaired the broken jaw of Costa’s dog Lexi.

A kick from a horse broke Lexi’s jaw, according to Costa.

The injury required extensive, expensive surgery to fix. The dog was treated at MSPCA-Angell in Boston.

Costa and her friends operated the stand outside Washburn Park. 

“I love my dog,” she said.

The group sold sweet snacks and drinks, collecting the cash funds for the animal hospital in a glass jar.

“So that way, another dog can have [treatment too],” Costa said.

MSPCA-Angell, the veterinary center in Boston, not only treated Lexi’s broken jaw but also helped to pay the costs of the care, according to Costa.

Teal and purple paint covered the stand, which was also adorned with plant and butterfly decorations. A sandwich board beside the colorful counter listed the afternoon’s offerings of desserts and drinks on the menu.

The top of the stand read “Girl power” in big, block letters.

A group of Marion firefighters had visited the stand and spent about $40, according to Costa. 

“They got a lot,” she said.

As a result of the horse kick, Lexi barely has any teeth, according to Costa. 

But her jaw isn’t broken anymore. She chases Costa and is “fine,” Costa said.

“She’s chewing sticks again,” she said.

The stand raised $500 for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, according to Hailey’s mother Jess Costa.
