‘Wonderful’ chorus and band help parents get into the holiday spirit
ROCHESTER — Some Rochester Memorial School fifth and sixth graders spent time spreading Christmas cheer rather than doing schoolwork on Thursday, Dec. 19 as the school’s two bands and chorus performed two concerts.
The first concert was held in the morning and attended by students and teachers. The afternoon show played host to a standing room only crowd of parents and family members.
Chorus teacher Sue Audette said students are not required to play an instrument or join the chorus, but many do and some even do both.
“We have so many talented kids,” said Audette. “They have progressed greatly. To be where they are at this time in the school year is amazing.”
A line of parents wrapped around the front of the school before the show started. Once everyone made it inside, Christmas and Hanukkah songs helped the crowd get into the holiday spirit.
“These are amazing students to work with,” said band teacher Kaitlyn Laprise, who described the group of students as hard-working, smart and dedicated.
The concert band opened up the show with two songs before the chorus took center stage.
Students Leo Forns and Gavin Garell performed solos as part of the song “Snow” by Teresa Jennings.
“I just love the way kids have the opportunity to shine,” said Audette. “If they want to do it, I think they should be able to experience these things and I just love seeing kids surprise themselves, build confidence and create a love for music.”
The jazz band wrapped up the show and students and families embraced before leaving for the day.
Audette said she hopes everyone in attendance walked away with more holiday spirit.
“I'm always so amazed to see how many people come out to support these wonderful students,” said Laprise.
