MARION — A Seekonk man was arrested in Marion on Friday, Dec. 20 after entering a home, stealing possessions and fleeing police.

Peter Soares, 56, was charged with seven crimes including breaking and entering during the daytime with intent to commit a felony and failure to stop for police.

A homeowner on Abel’s Way reported that a Ring doorbell camera captured video of a man stealing a lawn trimmer and leaving in a white pick up truck, according to the Marion Police Department.

A short time later, two Marion Police officers noticed a vehicle matching that description on Mill Street.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled at high speeds.

“Police then observed the pickup truck after it had crashed in the Silvershell Beach parking lot,” read a press release. “The driver, later identified as Soares, attempted to run away.”

Soares was taken into custody as he ran toward the water. He is expected to be arraigned on Monday, Dec. 23 at Wareham District Court.

Through an investigation, Marion Police determined that Soares had entered the house and a shed and had stolen additional property.

"Thanks to the homeowner who quickly reported suspicious activity on their camera, officers were able to locate the suspect's vehicle, ultimately leading to a prompt arrest in this case," Marion Police Chief Richard Nighelli said. “The actions of the homeowner and officers led to a desired outcome without any injuries."
