United States’ 250th birthday celebration committee in the works
MATTAPOISETT — The United States of America turns 250 years old in 2026 — and Mattapoisett resident Bobbi Gaspar is in the mood to celebrate.
Gaspar went in front of the Mattapoisett Select Board on Tuesday, April 8 to bring forth the idea of a townwide celebration honoring the many years the country has seen since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.
In light of recent contentions with the United States’ political climate, Gaspar ensured the celebration would be honoring all who reside in the country.
“Today a lot of populations are calling the U.S. home,” she said. “Whether they were born here, came here for jobs or are here for school — they’re sensing that something is going on and something is turning scary.”
Gaspar said the celebration would be a chance to rouse the patriotic spirit of the community — showing people how proud they can be to be a part of the country. As for interest in such an event, she brought up past parties that drew large crowds.
“Being part of the celebration that we had in 1976 for the 200 years and how wonderful the memories are — it put me in a good feeling. I think it left everybody here with a good feeling,” she said.
She talked of the committee the town had for that event and the subcommittees that followed and asked the board for support in going ahead to gauge public interest. Gaspar has already garnered support from local groups and organizations like the Mattapoisett Historical Museum.
Chair Jordan Collyer expressed interest in the idea.
“I’d like to see what comes out of the informational session first — in discussions first,” he said. “See what you can get for interest and involvement and then we can form a committee.”
What is already in the works right now is dates and activities. Gaspar said the celebration could potentially be on Memorial Day weekend from Friday, May 22 to Monday, May 25. Ideas stem from picnics, parades and even a birthday cake in honor of the country turning 250.
The date for the informational session is to be determined.
