Marion officials approve contractors for Music Hall, Museum repairs

Nov 27, 2012

It’s been four months since the 50-foot by 50-foot ceiling of the Marion Natural History Museum collapsed. Now, reconstruction can begin.

Last week, the Marion Selectmen approved the Canton-based Dimitrios C. Contracting to rebuild the ceiling of the museum.

The ceiling, which was first constructed in 1872, collapsed in July due to the deterioration of the old building.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson said the contractor was approved with a bid of $34,700 to complete the necessary repairs.

“All costs will be born by the insurance company,” Dawson said.

A project to install better exterior lighting at the Music Hall on Front Street was also given the go ahead by the Selectmen last week.

Over the past year, several residents have voiced concern about the lack of lighting outside of the Music Hall.

Citing safety concerns, the Music Hall Advisory Committee requested that the Selectmen hire a contractor to make the repairs.

Last week, the Selectmen approved a bid from Brite Lite Electrical Company of Weymouth to install new lighting on the walkways and on the flagpole outside of the building.

The cost for the project will be $77,700, which Dawson said would be taken from the Music Hall Endowment Fund.

There is no start date for either project at this time.
