Tabor boys basketball: Rebuilding, still winning

Dec 14, 2012

Tabor Academy boys varsity basketball claimed another three wins at the start of an already strong season for the Seawolves.

On Friday, Tabor defeated Avon Old Farms School of Connecticut 61-42 at the Class A Winter Classic Tournament. Also on Friday, the boys defeated Trinity-Pawling School of New York in a close game of 85-80. The team claimed its third win on Saturday against St. Paul's School 69-57.

The latest wins brought the Seawolves’ overall regular season record to 5-1.

Last year, the team finished with a regular season record of 15-9, including a run in the New England Prep School Tournament. The boys were knocked out of the championships in March after making it to the semi-finals.

For coach Chris Millette, this season began as a rebuilding year.

“We lost five seniors last year,” Millette said. “We have good players coming in. With new guys, you have to work on team chemistry. The more you play, the better you get. Everyone has skills to bring and we’re just trying to find the best use for those.”

With several strong players, Millette said the team keeps improving.

One of the team’s strongest assets is center Jared Reuter of Rochester, Millette said.

“He literally is one of the best players in the country. Last year, he was ranked the 17th best sophomore player by ESPN,” Millette said.

The Winter Classic gave the team the perfect opportunity to show off, Millette said.

“The best thing about it is that there are a lot of college coaches. That’s exciting for us and for our guys. We have five seniors this year, so it’s good for the ones looking to play in college,” Millette said.

As for the rest for the season, Millette said, “We’re just playing well and we’re getting good.”
