Planning Board approves proposed pier
Now that nearly all Marion and state officials have signed off on the construction of a privately-owned pier, the town’s Planning Board has granted approval of the project.
The proposed pier would be constructed at 203 Front Street in Marion and would be four feet wide by 253 feet long. The owners, David and Linda Nielson, requested a special permit from the Planning Board to construct the pier.
Dave Davignon, of the Mattapoisett engineering firm N. Douglas Schneider and Associates, presented the plans for the project on Tuesday. Davignon said the property currently has no boating access.
Several board members were concerned with the length of the pier, which Davignon said was designed to be 253 feet long to avoid the eelgrass that is abundant in the area.
Chair Jay Ryder echoed those concerns, but added that he received positive feedback from Harbormaster Mike Cormier.
“Mike said that he had no problems with it,” Ryder said. “He said that it is no longer than any other pier in the harbor.”
So far, Davignon said the town’s Harbormaster, Conservation Commission, and Shellfish Officer have endorsed the project. The owners of the property are still waiting for a waterways license to be issued by the state’s Department of Environmental Protection.
Ryder commended Davignon’s work on the project. “I think you’ve done a great job with this,” Ryder said.
Davignon said the construction could begin after May 1 and would have to be finished by October 15.
The board has drafted a decision to approve the project, which is will now go to Town Counsel Jon Witten for review before an official decision is rendered.
Once the decision is official, the petitioners would have to wait for a 21-day appeal period to end before they can apply for a building permit.
