Alert neighbor credited with arrest for Mattapoisett housebreak

MATTAPOISETT — Police are crediting quick thinking by alert neighbors for two arrests Saturday, July 2, in connection with a housebreak on Route 6.

At about 7 p.m., police received a 911 call about a possible break into a residence, according to information provided by Mattapoisett Police. The caller reported seeing a male get out of a vehicle in a neighbor’s driveway and attempt to gain entry through the front door. 

The caller also saw a female passenger in the vehicle get behind the wheel and park the car down the street. 

The caller approached the home and heard noise coming from the residence, police said. When the neighbor attempted to make contact with the individual, the suspect fled out the back door toward Brandt Island Road,

At about the same time, another 911 caller reported a suspicious individual matching the suspect’s description walking up and down driveways on Brandt Island Road, police said. 

Police responded to the area where Officer Aaron Bates located the suspect in nearby woods. The suspect resisted arrest, leading to a struggle on the side of the road. With the assistance of a bystander and responding police, the suspect was taken into custody, police said.

Jeffrey Hoskyns, 34, of 357 Coggeshall St., New Bedford, was charged with breaking and entering during the daytime to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property under $1200, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

After his arrest ,Fairhaven Police located the vehicle he had been seen in and arrested the driver, Samantha Amaral, 27, of 227 Warren St., Fall River. She was charged with breaking and entering during the daytime to commit a felony and misleading a police officer. 

Both individuals were arraigned in Wareham 4th District Court on July 5.

The Mattapoisett Police Department thanked the Fairhaven Police Department and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations Unit for their assistance in the apprehension of the suspects and the investigation.
