With Arbor Day on the horizon, Selectmen talk trees

The Mattapoisett Tree Committee got approval to plant one tree, was denied planting another and will have to ask neighbors about a third.

Tree Committee Chair Sandy Hering spoke to Selectmen on Tuesday night.

They had no problem with replacing a tree cut down outside Town Hall last spring, but they were not keen on one for Shipyard Park. Hering suggested that succession planting would be a wise choice there in the event of a 100-year storm and as other trees at the park age.

“It is not going to be a hindrance in a big way to people’s water view,” she said. “When it is on public land, we need to be able to make a statement that we want to have a green canopy over our heads in this town, otherwise if we don’t take the action on this, I don’t think we will have any trees planted in these locations.”

Selectman Tyler Macallister disagreed.

“Shipyard Park is used for so many difference venues, if we add anything else, it will tighten our limited space in there.”

Selectman Paul Silva was also concerned about blocking the  harbor views of neighbors whose property is adjacent to the park.

“I don’t think we should be taking away those views, frankly,” said Silva.

Town Administrator Assistant Mel Pacheco said there were efforts to add a tree to the park 20 years ago, but it “did not fly.”

Selectmen were less concerned with the idea of planting a Japanese cherry tree at Town Wharf, near the Munro Preserve Property. Harbormaster Jill Simmons said she would purchase the tree.

Macallister requested information from Hering on the tree and how fast it would grow. A letter will be sent to residents who live across the street from the proposed site to make sure they are OK with it.

At Monday’s meeting, Selectmen also approved Arbor Day for April 29. The Tree Committee plans to plant the tree at Town Hall on that day, which will also help the town keep its Tree City USA designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

In addition, the committee will look to replace trees that have been cut down in the Village due to road and sidewalk repairs.
