Boy Scouts move out of camp, property up for sale
It was a sad day for Troop 31 as the Rochester Boy Scouts had to officially move out of Camp HoRoHi on Saturday.
The camp, located on property owned by Clark Family Boggs, has been home to Troop 31 since Howard Robert Hiller gave the Boy Scouts usage rights in 1971.
In December, Scout Master Mike Blanchard found out that one of the property owners, Deb Clark, had spoken to the Conservation Commission about selling the 24-acre property.
“I wasn’t told beforehand,” Blanchard said. “[Clark] had sent an email but forgot to add my email address. She was very apologetic.”
There is not currently a buyer for the property, but at the end of January the troop officially received a 30-day eviction notice.
“We bought a storage container,” Blanchard said. “So we’re moving everything into there.”
Camp HoRoHi was the location for most of the Boy Scouts’ events over the past 45 years.
“We would camp here every other month, this is where we have our annual turkey dinner,” he said. “We call it home.”
The scouts plan to use the YMCA-owned property on Snow’s Pond Road for future camping activities. However, there are no structures for them to use on the property, so for now the contents of Camp HoRoHi will remain in storage.
“We’re very grateful to the Clark and Hiller families for letting us use this property,” Blanchard said. “We cherish the memories that we made here. All good things must come to an end.”
