Bulldogs continue tournament run
A decisive win against Seekonk on Friday night moved the Bulldogs further along in the state football tournament.
The Bulldogs are the number one seed in the division five tournament and face East Bridgewater Friday at Old Rochester Regional High School. The game starts at 7 p.m.
“The stakes are going to get higher,” Coach Harry Quinlan told his team following the 32-15 win at home.
Halftime arrived with the score 13-7 in the Bulldogs favor. In the third quarter, junior Matt Bourgeois caught a six-yard pass from quarterback Haydon Bergeron and put victory out of reach for Seekonk. The Warriors only other touchdown occurred late in the fourth quarter. Despite some close calls, Seekonk’s offensive line was stopped again and again by Bulldog defense.
The Bulldogs defeated East Bridgewater during the regular season, but Quinlan said he wanted the team to make corrections ahead of Friday’s game.
“We need to clean up some mistakes. This wasn’t a pretty win,” Quinlan said. “[East Bridgewater] is a beatable team, but they’re among one of the best team’s we’ve played so far.”
This year marks the first time the team will navigate a new playoff system. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association shortened the regular season from 11 games to eight, but placed the top teams from the regular season into six division playoff tournaments. After the first two rounds of playoff games, conference teams will compete in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game. That game will not impact ORR’s tournament standing.
After Thanksgiving, the playoffs resume until a state champion has been named in each division. Before the change, teams competed in a regional format, which did not crown a true state championship team in each division.
