Thursday, Oct. 17

Print 3D costumes.

The Elizabeth Taber Library will let patrons design and 3D print parts of their costumes. The event will last from 3 to 5 p.m. 

Make flashlights.

At the Mattapoisett Library at 3:15 p.m. children ages 8 and older can explore positive and negative currents and make a flashlight. Registration is required for this event.

Meet an author.

Author Rachel Slade will visit Tabor Academy as its 2019 Writer in Residence. She will be on campus for one week to share how she came upon the story behind her book “Into the Raging Sea” and researched it. She will also share other thoughts about being a professional writer.

Tabor selected “Into the Raging Sea” as its community-wide summer read. The book is about the U.S. container ship El Faro, lost at sea with 33 people on board during Hurricane Joaquin in 2015. Slade’s talk will be in Hoyt Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 18

Sign up for “Tables of Content.”

The deadline to sign up for the second annual Elizabeth Taber Library “Tables of Content” is Oct. 18.

The event features dinner and a book discussions on either Nov. 9 or 17 depending on book choices. Sign up at the library, or online using the library’s paypal link. The cost to attend this event is $60 per person.

Saturday, Oct. 19

Bake pies.

The Marion Council on Aging is looking to crown the best apple pie baker. 

To enter the contest, bake two pies. One will be submitted for judging, the other will be available for purchase.

Pies must be dropped off between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Community Center. Judging will take place at noon. Proceeds from sale of pies will go to the Friends of the Marion Council On Aging.

Not a baker? Then just stop in and buy a whole pie or just enjoy a slice. Pies will be on sale from noon to 2 p.m.

Carve pumpkins.

The Marion Art Center will host a day of pumpkin carving and free face painting on its lawn. Attendees of all ages and abilities can bring pumpkins and carving tools to work from noon to 2 p.m. The art center will provide hot cider, doughnuts and face painting from 12:30 to 1:30. 

Participants should dress for the outdoors, and may dress in costumes. A rain date for both carving and face painting is scheduled for Oct. 20 from noon to 2 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 20

Support the YMCA.

On Sunday, Oct. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. the Mattapoisett YMCA will come alive with food, drinks, a bonfire and lawn games for its Harbor Brew Fest. 

The YMCA will have corn hole and giant Jenga on the front field.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 day of the event. All proceeds will go to the Mattapoisett YMCA’s Annual Campaign ensuring that the organization is available for children and families that need the group’s support.

Listen to jazz.

The Tri-County Symphonic Band will jazz up the start of their season with a jazz concert of 20th and 21st century pieces on Oct. 20.

The performance will take place at Tabor Academy’s Fireman Performing Arts Center.  Saxophonist  Marcus Monteiro will join the band as the featured soloist.  The concert will also include a performance by the Old Rochester Regional High School Jazz Band.

Fifty percent of the online ticket sales on BrownPaperTickets.com will benefit the Friends of Old Rochester Music Association.
