Covid cases continue to decline from October spike

Oct 29, 2021

New covid cases declined for the third straight week in the week leading up to Oct. 28, after cases spiked sharply in early October, according to state covid data.

Among the towns, Marion had 10 new cases, Mattapoisett had 12 and Rochester had 14. In total, the Tri-Town had 36 new cases of covid after tallying 43 the previous week.

Over the last four weeks, the Tri-Town has averaged just under 50 new cases per week.

At Tri-Town schools, new cases also declined, reaching their lowest level since the district began reporting covid statistics in late September. However, students were only in school on Monday and Tuesday this week because of cancellations caused by the nor’easter.

The ORR district reported just four new cases of covid from its six schools this week, including two from ORR High School and two from Rochester Memorial School. In total, the district has reported 103 covid cases this school year.

Meanwhile, vaccination rates remain very high in Marion and Mattapoisett where over 80% of residents are fully vaccinated and about 90% have at least one dose.

In Rochester, however, vaccination rates have largely stagnated near the county average. About 68% of Rochester residents have had at least one dose of a covid vaccine, with 62% fully vaccinated.

As of Oct. 28, Plymouth County had an average of 70% of residents with at least one dose and 63% fully vaccinated.

OR Junior High School reported a full-vaccination rate of 58.8% on Oct. 22, while OR High School is at 79.3%.

Additionally, two Tri-Town elementary schools reported vaccination rates for the first time this week, with 62% of Rochester Memorial School and 52.6% of Sippican School fully vaccinated.

However, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recently delayed the earliest date that school mask mandates could be lifted from Nov. 1 until January 15.

After that time, any school that reaches an 80% full-vaccination rate will be eligible to have its mask mandates lifted.

State covid data is released every Thursday evening and ORR covid data is released every Friday evening.
