Crowds relish visit from Oscar Mayer Weinermobile
Make no mistake. When the Weinermobile comes to town, people notice.
On Sunday and Monday, Oscar Meyer’s bright orange and yellow hot dog shaped vehicle was seen cruising the streets of Mattapoisett with stops at the Town Wharf and Ned’s Point.
A number of questions come to mind: Is Oscar opening a hot dog franchise in Mattapoisett? Vacationing with the Planters Peanut? Or perhaps researching recipes for the world’s first quahog dog?
Not exactly. In fact, the Weinermobile and a film crew were in town shooting a commercial using Mattapoisett as the backdrop.
“We needed a very picturesque location to shoot and Mattapoisett is perfect with the lighthouse here and the beach community,” said Producer Larry Gold.
Gold and his crew from Detour Films of Santa Monica, California shot footage with the iconic cars (there are six of them around the country) in California and Chicago before coming to New England.
A location manager based in Boston scoured towns from Maine to the South Coast and decided on Mattapoisett as the perfect spot.
“The town’s been great. They’ve been super cooperative,” said Gold.
He said Police Chief Mary Lyons as well as Melody Pacheco at the town administrator’s office were helpful. The town permitted several boulders in front of the Ned’s Point Lighthouse to be moved while the crew filmed as well as a nighttime setup at Ned’s Point for a time lapse video.
During the day, the Weinermobile attracted a small crowd wherever it stopped ... including one pair who thought they might see a certain Hollywood star recently filming in Wareham.
“Is Mark Wahlberg here?” said Laura Charis. “I heard they were filming 'Ted 2.'”
Charis said she had seen a post on Facebook Monday morning saying Wahlberg was at Ned's Point. She and her husband, Jim, didn’t really believe the actor would be there, but decided to check just in case.
The Charis’ didn’t stay long, but Jackie White and her friends kept vigil for more than an hour.
“We’ve just been sitting here observing,” said White, who is visiting from Maine. “We were here when it arrived, and we were intrigued with it.”
White and friends said they heard the people inside the Weinermobile singing the Oscar Mayer weiner song.
They hoped to get a glimpse of the commercial in action. There were a pair of actors in the vehicle, but aside from members of the crew shaking the truck to simulate motion and a few cameras, there wasn’t too much to be seen.
A few people also came down to see if there were any hot dogs up for grabs. Alas, Gold said the Weinermobile doesn’t have a kitchen. And just as he couldn’t offer up any free frankfurters, neither would he make a peep as to the commercial’s plot.
“I can’t disclose that,” he said.
Gold did note that the commercial would be broadcast from coast to coast. He expects it to come out by the end of the year or next year.
