Eight tri-town Destination Imagination teams are heading to the state tournament in Worcester on April 1.

The eight teams are part of the 14 from the district that participated in the Region 9 and Region 10 tournaments. Two of the teams advancing are from the high school, two are from the junior high and four are from Rochester Memorial School.

Destination Imagination, a nonprofit organization, promotes creative problem-solving and teamwork.

Students solve problems in different categories using skits.

“There’s a lot of cross curriculum learning,” said Tina Rood, who manages the teams.

In addition to moving on to the state tournament, teams also received other awards. One of the high school teams won the fine arts challenge, which was given to those who act as superior role models in the areas of spirit, sportsmanship or volunteerism.

The same team also received an award for outstanding engineering, design and/or performance.

The fourth grade RMS team won the same award at the elementary level.
