EEE found in Mattapoisett
The nights have gotten chilly, but with no frost the threat of mosquitoes carrying life-threatening illnesses continues.
On Friday, Sept. 20, the Mattapoisett Board of Health was informed that a mosquito testing positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis was found in the town.
EEE can cause swelling of the brain and has a high mortality rate. Last year, a horse in Rochester died after contracting the disease.
No EEE mosquitoes have been found in Marion or Rochester so far this year, but both Marion and Mattapoisett have reported mosquitoes with the West Nile Virus.
The board of health recommends residents to remain vigilant in protecting themselves against mosquito bites. Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, avoid going out during peak hours of mosquito activity, drain standing water, and make sure screens are secure and have no holes.
