Elementary students celebrate fitness, fun and friends
Elementary school students at Old Hammondtown and Rochester Memorial School found a novel way to stay fit on Friday.
While Old Hammondtown hosted a traditional "Field Day", full of outdoor team-building activities. The games were intended to promote cooperation, and included activities such as a race by each team to send a marble from one end of the field to the other, using limited piping - the students had to continually move toward the end of the line as soon as the marble passed the section of pipe they held, so that the pipe-building would stay ahead of the marble.
Rochester Memorial celebrated "Fitness Fun Day", on June 2. The morning started out with a 2.5 mile "Miles for Memorial" walk which curved from Pine Street to Snipatuit Road, on to Hartley Road and back before arrival at the school.
After the walk, a number of different activities were available for the students. The event included several options for students including basketball, yoga, gymnastics, soccer, hula-hooping and even cross-fit. Rachel Hallett of Baystate Gymnastics (based in North Dartmouth) was on hand to help students learn to backflip, or practice a tumbling routine.
