Emergency shellfish closing west of Brandt Beach a precaution
Apr 25, 2012
A fuel spill near Nasketucket Bay on Sunday, April 22 prompted the Department of Marine Fisheries to issue an emergency shellfish closing west of Brandt Beach Avenue.
The spill occurred when a boat capsized on Sunday evening, said Fairhaven Harbormaster David Darmofal, who was on the scene with the Coast Guard. There were no major injuries.
The closing began on Tuesday, April 24 and the area reopened for shellfishing at dawn on April 26.
Mattapoisett Harbormaster Horace Field said the fuel spill was minor and the closing was a safety precaution.
Field said that the area would “self clean”.
“It’s like a thimble full of something in a huge swimming pool,” he said.
