Fine Arts Night brings together Mattapoisett's creative kids

The young artists of Mattapoisett converged on Old Hammondtown School Thursday for a night of visual and musical art.
Greta Anderson, the art teacher for Center School and Old Hammondtown, helped coordinate the Fine Arts Night, featuring artwork from every student in the two schools.
“Every student chose their favorite thing from the whole year,” said Anderson. “I wanted there to be a variety, and I wanted the kids to choose what went up – something they felt really proud of.”
Parents and kids walked the hallways of the school finding where masks, self-portraits, landscapes, alien sculptures, and collages lined the walls.
Holyn Turner, a third grade student, chose a superhero painting she made to hang on the wall.
“She shoots bees at villains and water,” said Holyn of her superhero’s special powers.
This year, Fine Arts Night incorporated the annual spring concert with music from the fourth grade chorus, the jazz band, and the concert bands.
“Adding the spring concert was sort of a master plan to do an art-music night,” said Anderson. “A lot of people have kids who are already here, so more people see the music and the art.”
In the cafetorium, there was a packed house for the concert portion of the evening, which included the chorus’ song “Taco Bell,” a tongue in cheek play on the Paco Bell Cannon. The bands, lead by director Paul Halpainy, followed.
Of his students, Halpainy said, “These kids know the meaning of perseverance and hard work.
