Frederic Stanley Bacon III
July 29, 1940 – February 26, 2026
Frederic Stanley Bacon III, of Marion, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026. He was 85 years old. Born in July 1940 at Melrose Hospital in Melrose, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Frederic Stanley Bacon Jr. and Katherine (Dingle) Bacon. Raised in Massachusetts,
Fred carried forward a proud family legacy rooted in service, integrity, and quiet strength. Fred served his country in the United States Navy and was stationed at Naval Base Norfolk in Virginia, where he and his beloved wife began building their life together. He also served aboard the USS America, among other assignments. His time in the service shaped his steady character, strong sense of duty, and lifelong patriotism. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, Fred worked in the public sector for American Science & Engineering and Zenith Electronics. Finally realizing his entrepreneurial dream, he founded USN Consulting — “USN” standing for Uncle Sam’s Niece, a loving tribute to his wife, Jean, who was born on the Fourth of July.
He shared fifty-three devoted years of marriage with his wife, Jean Morgan Bacon, who predeceased him in 2019. Together, they built a life centered on family, loyalty, and deep connection. Fred was a devoted father and grandfather who took immense pride in his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Elizabeth Neville (David Sr.) of Marion; Sarah Buckley (Michael) of Middleboro; and Ned Bacon (Aileen) of Chicago. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Katherine Farley (Chris), David Everett (Courtney), Anne Stevenson, Mary Stevenson, and Morgan Bacon; as well as beloved bonus grandchildren: David “DJ” Neville Jr., Carla Buckley, Jessica Wetherell (John), and Jessica Buckley.
He cared deeply for his extended family and friends, many of whom welcomed him into the next part of his journey. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Beverly Morgan; his dear friend, Diane Ward; and his niece and nephews. Fred was immensely proud to be an active amateur radio operator (call signs N1TF and WA1MRH) and a dedicated member of the Southeastern Massachusetts Amateur Radio Association, where he served as a Volunteer Examiner Team Leader. His varied interests also included being a Past Master of the May Flower Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Middleboro, a member of the DuPage Shrine Club in Addison, Illinois, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid train enthusiast and spent many happy days at the Illinois Railway Museum, where he was an active member. His radio call sign, N1TF, was a nod to his love of train history — N1TF stood for “Number 1 Train Fan.” Fred found purpose, fulfillment, and joy in serving his community and connecting with others — whether across town or across the airwaves.
Fred will be remembered for his steady presence, dry wit, and the quiet way he showed up for the people he loved. A lifelong admirer of John Wayne, he appreciated the Duke’s simple code of courage and loyalty, often reflecting the line, “Courage is being scared to death… and saddling up anyway.” It was a sentiment that perfectly mirrored the way Fred lived his own life. His life was marked not by loud declarations, but by consistent devotion — to his country, his family, and his community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
