Girl Scouts learn from a Broadway star
MARION — Marion's Girl Scout Troop 67047 lived the Broadway experience in New York City.
The troop met with Joomin Hwang, a broadway actor, for a workshop learning a verse and choreography to "Larger than Life" from the show "& Juliet."
The girls then had a question and answer session, which included learning what a "jukebox musical is." Hwand told them that he thought he was too old when he started dancing as a 12-year-old, before coming to learn that Broadway actors are all ages with diverse backgrounds.
Hwang said he went on 600 auditions before getting hired, and that rejectino is "just part of the process — that if you find a passion for what you do and are persistent, that you will get there," a message from the troop said.
The troop then had some free time to explore Times Square before seeing Hwang perform in "& Juliet" at the Stephen Sondheim Theater. The play has an alternate ending to Shakespeare's tragedy, focusing on what Juliet's life would have been life if she survived.
The day ended at Bryant Park near the public library before boarding the bus back home.
Charlee, one of the Girl Scouts, has acted locally in 10 shows, three movies and was recently cast as the lead in Old Rochester Regional Middle School's production of “Sherlock and Cinders”.
