Marion Fire Department charges up to teach fire safety
MARION — The Marion Fire Department opened its doors to the community Friday, Oct. 9 for an open house teaching kids and their families how to reduce fire risk and stay safe.
This year’s theme was “Charge Into Fire Safety, Safe Charging Is A Superpower,” and department personnel gave talks about safe battery charging, ice and winter safety, and extinguishing cooking fires.
Firefighters Proffitt and Jackson St. Don spoke about avoiding charging lithium-ion batteries on soft surfaces and the warning signs of overheating.
Firefighter Christopher Peckham taught attendees winter safety tips, like never assuming ice is safe to walk on, and shared how the fire department rescues people from the ice.
Captain Brooks Wilson showed people how effective smothering a cooking fire is, and reminded people to never use water on a grease fire.
