Girls tennis figuring out how to pair players as season starts

Apr 8, 2014

The Old Rochester Regional High School girls tennis team started the season off with a 1-1 record. The Lady bulldogs visited Bishop Stang on Tuesday, April 1 for the season opener. ORR fell to Bishop Stang 1-4. The team's lone match win came from sophomore Morgan Middleton at third singles.

The day following the season opener ORR had its home opener against Dartmouth High School. It was a match of change-ups and comebacks for the Bulldogs.

Coach Robert Hohne said the most difficult part of the season would be finding two doubles pairings that “clicked.”  Hohne changed up the roster to feature Middleton with senior Triona Cuddy at first doubles, sophomore Charlotte Levine at third singles and senior Rachel Brown with freshman Emma Collings at second doubles.

From this shake-up, the Lady Bulldogs were able to earn its first win of the season with a score of 3-2. At second singles, Dickerson battled back after losing the first set to take the second set to a 6-5 advantage. Dickerson won the match after her opponent had to forfeit.

The key comeback for ORR came in first doubles. After losing the first set 6-0, Middleton and Cuddy came back to win the second set 6-4 and the third set 6-4.  Regarding their comeback, the partners said, “We worked really well together and it paid off!”

Hohne is content with the start to his team’s season. He says, “We’re seeing improvement overall in the team, and that is what we’re looking for in the start of the season.”

Brown agreed.

“It's a learning process, but we’re looking good for the future,” she said.
