MATTAPOISETT — Have some fun with fungi during a family hike held Sunday, Nov. 3 from 9 to 10 a.m. by the Mattapoisett Land Trust and Mass Audubon.

The all-ages hike at “Walega-Livingstone Preserve” in the Brandt Island Cove trail system will begin at the Anchorage Way trailhead located at the end of Tara Road.

Staff from Mass Audubon will lead the walk and teach about “fascinating fungi,” an announcement said.

“Fungi are the decomposers and recyclers of our forest systems,” the announcement said. “Without them, forests would take much longer to regenerate. The mushrooms we see are just the spore-producing bodies of a much larger and more complex organism growing in the wood or ground below.”

Long pants and close-toed hiking shoes are commended for the trail. Parking is available along the street.

The hike is free, but registration is required. Visit massaudubon.org/programs and search “Fun with Fungi.”
