Land Trust ‘trail passports’ to launch in Mattapoisett
MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Land Trust has a new initiative to get families walking on local trails, said Mattapoisett Land Trust Community Engagement and Stewardship Manager Colleen Andrews.
In may 2022 Andrews created a “Trail Passport” to “incentivize and encourage families with children to adventure outdoors,” she wrote in a press release.
Andrews and the Mattapoisett Land Trust created the booklet with the help of students and teachers at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School.
Machine and tool technology instructor Michael Ferreira and his students helped to design, create prototypes, and then, the final versions of the “stamps” for the Trail Passport.
Made of stainless steel with laser-cut designs, the metal stamps were cut with the Mattapoisett Land Trust logo and individual numbers so that passport users can take a pencil or crayon, lay their booklet on top of the stamp, and create a rubbing of each stamp they find on their adventures.
Graphic communications and design instructor Kathy Peterson and her students printed and bound all the Trail Passport booklets. The graphic design department helped to finalize the design of the booklet and printed 100 booklets.
The Trail Passports can be picked up at the children’s section of the Mattapoisett Public Library for free. Once completed and full of stamps, the Trail Passport holder will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Oxford Creamery courtesy of the Mattapoisett Land Trust.
